How Do You Like Your Waffles?

How Do You Like Your Waffles?

If you think about it, waffles are just pancakes that have aspired to something greater than their basic ingredients. There are over a dozen different varieties of waffles around the world, with different batters and toppings, waffles are an idea that was so good they kept being reinvented—with delicious results. They can be big or small, crispy or chewy, sugared or spiced, and we love everything about them!

Your Waffle Options

Sweet Waffles

Traditionally, waffles are served with butter and maple syrup, or fruit and whipped cream. At Kate’s Kitchen and Ronnie’s Restaurant, we are known to eat them with pie filling and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top! If it’s sweet, there’s no reason not to put it on a waffle. If you want to try something a little more involved, try caramel macchiato waffles: just add some strong espresso (or good quality instant coffee powder) and a pinch of cocoa powder to your waffle batter, then top the cooked waffles with whipped cream and caramel sauce!

Savory Waffles

Waffles aren’t just for breakfast! The classic savory combination is chicken and waffles but have you tried chili and waffles? Use your favorite cornbread mix and cook the batter in your waffle iron, then top with chili, sour cream, shredded cheddar, onions, or any of your favorite chili toppings. This makes a delicious and filling dinner when the weather turns cool, but it’s just as good in the summer—and you don’t have to worry about turning on the oven and heating your house up because it is all done on the waffle iron!

Feeling Fancy?

These are special waffles, made to celebrate important life milestones like a birthday, an anniversary, or just a lazy Saturday morning. Any time is a good time for waffles, and the only thing better than waffles is fancy waffles. You can make any waffle fancy by adding something to the batter, or by using fun toppings.

For batter mix-ins, we recommend cake sprinkles if you want a confetti cake waffle, fresh berries if you want a pop of color without the artificial colors, or chocolate chips if you want to eat chocolate for breakfast (because who doesn’t?!). If you are looking for some added flavor and protein, try mixing in peanut butter and topping with grape jelly for a waffle PB and J. Use toppings to make a silly face, have a fun design, or spell out a special message. Another great way to upgrade your waffle is with a less traditional substitute for syrup, like jam, caramel, or chocolate sauce. Mix and match until you find your perfect waffle—and then keep mixing and matching because you never know what combination you will discover next!

On The Side

Waffles are mostly thought of as a main dish; however, even when served on the side their unique texture and flavor still steal the spotlight! Don’t believe us? Get creative and see for yourself! If you are bored with your waffle routine and need a new recipe, try incorporating waffles into your other dishes! These are just a few of our favorite ways to use waffles on the side because why settle for only having waffles once a day?!

Waffle Cones + Bowls

You can get a traditional waffle cone at your local ice cream shop but its hard, crunchy, and often stale. Try making your own out of a fresh fluffy waffle and fill it with ice cream!

Stroop Waffles

Imagine a layer of rich caramel between two golden waffles… sounds amazing right? This dreamy snack was invented by the Dutch and is traditionally dipped into their morning coffee. Try making this side into a fancy waffle by adding coffee to your waffle batter and drizzling caramel on top!

S’more Waffles

Move over Graham Crackers! Cut your waffle into quarters. Fill them with gooey marshmallows and rich chocolate for a s’more that is out of this world.

Waffle Burrito

Breakfast burritos are great for busy mornings. Try customizing a regular breakfast burrito by using a waffle instead of a tortilla. It’s all of your favorite breakfast foods in one convenient on the go wrap! Make it sweet with fresh fruit and whipped cream, savory with eggs and veggies, or have the best of both worlds with bacon and maple syrup!

Those are the ways that we like waffles—basically, we’re saying we’ll eat any waffles, all waffles, and we just really love waffles!
