How A Balanced Breakfast Can Improve Your Entire Day

how-a-balanced-breakfast-can-improve-your-entire-day

We have all heard it, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!” This well known phrase probably has crossed your mind as you begrudgingly grab a protein bar and your thermos of burnt coffee.  What if we told you that eating a balanced breakfast can improve your entire day? It may take a little extra time, but trust us it is worth losing a little sleep over.

The Science Behind Breakfast

Fuel for Your Body

According to the latest evidence, we should all be aiming to consume around 15–25% of our daily caloric intake at breakfast (i.e., 300–500 calories for women and 375–625 for men; Spencer 2017 Betts et al., 2014)

Eating breakfast boosts your metabolism and gives your body the energy it needs to power through the day. If you skip breakfast, your body sends a message to itself saying, “Oh no! I have to conserve my calories for the rest of the day so I don’t starve to death.”  This will bring your metabolism to screeching halt which, in the long run, equals weight gain and other potential health issues.

Mental Health

In a series of large studies conducted by The Harvard School of Public Health it was found that drinking a couple of cups of coffee a day literally halved the suicide rate of 200,000 individuals. This suggests that what we eat and drink first thing in the morning can effects both our physical and mental health.

What Should you be Eating for Breakfast?
